With COVID-19, the various states and territories of Australia (as well as the country) have closed / have restrictions on their borders.
As always, this is changing on a regular basis, and the most up-to-date information about entry conditions, forms and requirements is on the government website of the state and territory to which you are travelling.
There are currently no restrictions on cross-border movement between ACT and NSW, beyond those that apply to everyone (ie not undertaking non-essential travel, maintaining social distancing rules etc)
As of 11.59pm on July 7, the NSW-Victoria border is closing, for the first time in over 100 years (last time was the Spanish flu)
If you are arriving in the Northern Territory from interstate, you must complete 14 days of forced quarantine unless you are eligible for exemption.
Entry into Queensland is temporarily prohibited unless the travel is exempt under the Chief Health Officer’s Border Restrictions Direction
The borders are looking to open on July 10, but not to Victoria.
From 12 noon 10 July any person from New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, may enter Queensland subject to completing and signing a border declaration.
The SA Government has eased border restrictions for people entering South Australia from Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. Quarantine requirements for all other states and territories were going to be eased on 20 July, but has now been scrapped. Check the SA Government’s travel restriction page for the up-to-date information about travel in and out of South Australia.
If you are planning travel to South Australia, aim to complete the Cross Border Travel Registration at least three days before you leave, regardless of where your travel begins.
All travellers intending to enter SA should register for pre-approval.
- All non-essential travellers arriving in Tasmania will be required to enter quarantine for 14 days.
- Tasmanian residents will be able to complete their 14 days of quarantine at their residence in Tasmania.
- Non-Tasmanian residents will still be required to complete their quarantine at Government provided accommodation.
- The border may be reopening on July 24, but there are calls to keep it closed to Victoria
As of 11.59pm on July 7, the NSW-Victoria border is closing, for the first time in over 100 years (last time was the Spanish flu). Domestic travel is restricted, and a return to Stay at Home restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire from 11:59pm on Wednesday 8 July 2020.
WA’s borders are now closed, travellers are not able to enter Western Australia unless exempt, exemptions are specified in the directions. Currently the earliest re-opening looked like August 8th, but this is being reconsidered given recent cases in Victoria.
