Civil Aviation Safety Authority To Ban Reclining Seats in Economy to Curb Passenger Rage

Rows of seats on a plane

The age old debate over whether you can recline, should recline, should lift during food services and the associated frustration and rage could soon be over with an announcement from CASA.  In an attempt to reduce the increase of passenger in-air rage, and to assist with Qantas, Jetstar, Rex and Virgin’s “No Carry On” campaign, the authority has requested airlines lock seats to prevent them from reclining.

Naturally, however, this will not apply in Business/First class seats, where passengers have paid more than those in cattle class and never cause riots or anger in air.

With an increase in passenger incidents, from refusing to wear masks, to arguing mandates on the ground, to getting intoxicated in a Bintang singlet on the way to Bali, airlines have struggled to combat this in ways that haven’t caused further anger from passengers, at a time which is already very hard on airlines.

As a result, the aviation authority has stepped in and made the decision for them.

To see the pitch on Qantas, Rex, Virgin and Jetstar, after locking has been attached, which will be performed on all Australian-registered planes in the next calendar quarter, see here.
