This is an ongoing post in the same style as our Qantas and Velocity points lists, this time for Air New Zealand’s loyalty programme. The naming has changed: Air New Zealand now calls the programme Koru, but the main spendable currency is still Airpoints. There are also Status Points, which help you move through Koru Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Black.
The useful bit: every Airpoint is equivalent to NZD $1, and you can earn Airpoints on flights, credit cards, groceries, fuel, hotels, rental cars, online shopping and a bunch of everyday partners. Rates change, so always double-check the official Koru partners directory before you buy.
Koru Account
First things first: join Koru if you have not already. It is the entry point for earning Airpoints with Air New Zealand, partners and credit cards. Add your Koru number whenever you book, shop or link partner accounts.
Air New Zealand Flights
The obvious one, but still the foundation. Koru members can earn Airpoints and Status Points on most eligible Air New Zealand flights. Add your Koru number when booking, then use the Air NZ earnings calculator to estimate what a specific route and fare will earn.
Status Points on Flights
If you care about lounge access, priority benefits and upgrades, watch Status Points as well as Airpoints. Air New Zealand’s Status Points page shows the current qualification thresholds, including Koru Silver, Gold, Platinum and Black.
Star Alliance Flights
Air New Zealand is a Star Alliance member, so eligible flights on carriers such as Singapore Airlines, United, Air Canada, ANA, Lufthansa, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and more can earn Airpoints and Status Points. Check the earn on flights page or calculator before booking, because fare class matters.
Partner Airline Flights
Air New Zealand also lists non-Star Alliance and co-operation partners in the earnings calculator, including Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Qantas, Virgin Atlantic and other partner airlines. If you are not flying Air NZ metal, the important trick is to confirm the exact booking class is eligible before you pay.

Quick Tips for Maximising Airpoints
- Add your Koru number everywhere: flights, hotels, rental cars, shopping partners and DoorDash.
- Use the Airpoints Mall before buying online: especially for fashion, electronics, gifts and travel gear.
- Stack where possible: partner earn plus an Airpoints earning card can mean two earning streams from one purchase.
- Compare prices first: Airpoints are nice, but not if the partner price is meaningfully higher.
- Check Status Points separately: Airpoints are the spendable currency; Status Points are for tiers and lounge-style benefits.
- Keep activity moving: if you are saving for flights, a small partner earn can help keep your account ticking over.
Koru now has more than 40 listed partners, plus flights, credit cards and the Airpoints Mall. The easiest wins for most people will be Everyday Rewards, New World, Z or Caltex, DoorDash, Airpoints Mall clicks, credit card spend and remembering to add your Koru number to every eligible flight.
If I have missed one, or a partner has changed rates since this was written, let me know and I will add it to the list.
