These fares are a mix of carriers. Air New Zealand has the widest domestic network and covers the regional airports the others don’t touch, with fares from Seat (carry-on only) up to Flexi. Jetstar competes on the main trunk routes between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown, and its cheapest fares are seat-only, so add bags and extras only if you need them. Sounds Air handles a number of the smaller regional hops, and other operators appear on some connections. Check which carrier you’re getting before you book, as the baggage allowances and change rules differ quite a bit.

New Zealand in August is deep winter: the Southern Lakes ski fields around Queenstown and Wanaka are mid-season, the West Coast and Fiordland are at their moodiest, and the main centres are quiet between the July and October school holidays. It’s also the cheapest stretch of the year to move around the country.
We’ve scanned every day of August across 110 domestic city pairs, covering all 11 main airports — Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier, New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown and Invercargill.
The cheapest fare found anywhere in the country is Auckland to Christchurch from $82 one way on 17 August, with Christchurch to Auckland from $85 on 9 August and Hamilton to Christchurch from $90 on 5 August close behind. The main trunk routes between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch all bottom out under $100.
All prices below are one way in NZD, and each is the cheapest date found in the 1–31 August window for that route. Regional pairs without a direct service will be routed as a connection, sometimes across more than one airline. Fares move constantly, so check the date that suits you rather than assuming the lowest one is still there.
Across all 110 New Zealand domestic city pairs scanned for August 2026, the cheapest fare is Auckland to Christchurch from $82 one way on 17 August. The trans-island trunk routes are the best value overall, while the thinner regional pairs — particularly anything touching Invercargill, Tauranga or Napier — carry a clear premium.
