About the Destinations
Cathay’s mainland China network reaches well past the two cities most Australians think of first. Official visitor information for all of them is at China Discovery from the China National Tourist Office.
Beijing is the imperial and political heart of the country: the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, and the Mutianyu and Badaling sections of the Great Wall within a couple of hours’ drive. Autumn (September to November) is the classic season - clear skies and mild days.
Shanghai is the counterweight - the Bund’s colonial waterfront facing the Pudong skyline across the Huangpu, the plane-tree streets of the former French Concession, and the Yuyuan Garden in the old town. It’s also the easiest base for day trips to the canal towns of Zhujiajiao and Suzhou.
Guangzhou anchors the Pearl River Delta and is the home of Cantonese food - yum cha here is the real thing. The Canton Tower, Shamian Island’s colonial quarter and the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall are the landmarks, and high-speed rail puts Hong Kong and Shenzhen well under an hour away.
Chengdu is the gateway to Sichuan, best known for the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, teahouse culture in People’s Park, and some of the spiciest food in China. The UNESCO-listed Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei are both day trips.
Chongqing is a mountain megacity built across steep river gorges, famous for hotpot, the Hongya Cave stilt-house complex lit up at night, and as the departure point for Yangtze River cruises through the Three Gorges.
Xiamen is a coastal city in Fujian with a much gentler pace - the car-free island of Gulangyu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of colonial villas, and the seaside ring road makes it one of the more walkable Chinese cities.
Xi’an was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and China’s capital for over a thousand years. The Terracotta Army is the drawcard, but the intact Ming city walls (cyclable end to end) and the Muslim Quarter’s night food streets deserve as much time.
Wuhan sits where the Han meets the Yangtze, with the Yellow Crane Tower, East Lake - one of the largest urban lakes in China - and a strong food scene built around breakfast noodles.
Changsha is the Hunan capital, known for its own fiery regional cuisine, the Orange Isle river park, and as the jumping-off point for Zhangjiajie’s sandstone pillars a few hours north.
Fuzhou is Fujian’s capital, a hot-spring city with the restored Three Lanes and Seven Alleys historic quarter and the Gushan mountain temples on its edge.
