Everywhere else in this list - Adelaide, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, the Gold Coast and Hobart - connects through a hub, which is why those fares sit higher and the total journey runs longer. The usual connecting airports are:

- Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK)
- Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL) or Brisbane (BNE), connecting onto the nonstop flights above
Check the minimum connection time against your itinerary before booking, especially if the layover is short or the booking is on separate tickets. A domestic-to-international connection at an Australian airport usually means changing terminals.
About the Destinations
Ho Chi Minh City: Vietnam’s biggest and busiest city, still called Saigon by most locals. Wander the French colonial streets around Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office, visit the War Remnants Museum and Ben Thanh Market, and take a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels or the Mekong Delta.
Hanoi: The capital is all about the Old Quarter’s narrow streets, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature and some of the best street food in Asia (start with pho and bun cha). It’s also the jumping-off point for Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The north gets genuinely cool from December to February.
Da Nang: A beach city in central Vietnam, with My Khe Beach, the Marble Mountains and the Ba Na Hills close by. The lantern-lit old town of Hoi An, another UNESCO site, is under an hour away. The central coast is best from February to August, before the wetter months.
