Western Sydney International (WSI) Takes Off: Jetstar & Qantas to Brisbane, Gold Coast & Melbourne from $184 Return
Sydney is about to get its second major airport, and the first airline through the gates is Jetstar, which will operate the very first commercial flights from Western Sydney International (WSI) Airport, serving Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Melbourne. QantasLink then joins the Brisbane and Melbourne routes from 28 March 2027, giving travellers a second carrier on those two (the Gold Coast remains Jetstar-only).
Itβs a genuine milestone β the first time in over a century that Sydney has opened a brand-new airport, rather than expanding the existing one at Mascot.
Return fares are already on sale from $184 (Gold Coast), with Melbourne from $202 and Brisbane from $254.

About the airport
Western Sydney International carries the official name Nancy-Bird Walton Airport, honouring the pioneering Australian aviatrix. Its airport code is WSI.
It sits at Badgerys Creek, roughly 45β50 km west of the Sydney CBD and well placed for the fast-growing communities of Greater Western Sydney β Liverpool, Penrith, Campbelltown and the new Bradfield city precinct nearby. For a large chunk of Sydneyβs population, WSI is considerably closer than the existing Kingsford Smith Airport across town.
A few things that make it a little different:
- 24-hour operation β unlike Kingsford Smith, WSI has no overnight curfew, so it can handle early-morning and late-night flights.
- Single terminal to start β designed to handle both domestic and international traffic under one roof, with room to grow.
- Built for expansion β the site is large, with plans to scale up capacity significantly over the coming decades.
Getting to and from WSI
Because itβs out west, planning your transfer is worth a momentβs thought:
- By car β the airport is positioned near the M12 Motorway, which links to the M7 and the wider Sydney motorway network. Thereβs on-site parking, and pick-up/drop-off zones at the terminal.
- By train (Metro) β a new Sydney Metro line will connect the airport to the broader rail network, with stations at the airport terminal and the surrounding Aerotropolis/Bradfield precinct, linking through to St Marys where you can interchange with the existing Sydney Trains network toward Parramatta and the CBD. Note: the Metro line is widely tipped to open later than the airport itself, with reports suggesting it may not be running until 2027 β so for the first flights, plan to drive or take a rideshare/taxi rather than relying on the train.
- Rideshare & taxi β available from the terminal forecourt; from the CBD allow a fair bit longer than you would for Mascot, particularly in peak traffic.
- From Western Sydney suburbs β if you live around Penrith, Liverpool, Camden or the Hawkesbury, WSI will likely be your quickest airport option by a wide margin.
A quick tip: if youβre used to Kingsford Smith, donβt assume the same travel times. Check your route to WSI before you book β for some travellers itβll be far more convenient, for others a longer haul.
Why it matters
A second Sydney airport adds capacity, competition and β over time β more route choices for travellers across NSW. Jetstar leads off with low-cost domestic fares from day one to Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Melbourne, with QantasLink adding a second carrier on the Brisbane and Melbourne routes from 28 March 2027 β three of the busiest and most useful routes in the country.
Keep an eye out as the schedule fills in β this is just the opening chapter for WSI.
